PESC's Development & Approval Process Ensures Consistency, Transparency
The Board of Directors of PESC - the Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council is pleased to announce the release of the Global Portable Document Format (PDF) Attachment as an Education Community Data Standard approved through PESC's development and approval process.
"By capitalizing on one of PDF's capabilities to serve as a container or conveyance, the Workgroup has devised a standard for embedding files within the PDF that can make the PDFs machine-readable. Also, if embedded files are themselves machine-readable (e.g., another standard XML file), the PDF joins with the other...PESC approved standards...as a very effective data exchange medium," states the Implementation Guide developed by the Workgroup. The development Workgroup is being co-chaired by Jim Bouse of the University of Oregon and Chris Kaschmitter of Avow Systems.
"Transparent collaboration is our cornerstone principle," states Michael D. Sessa, President & CEO of PESC. "The open development and approval process, which can be used as a model across the education landscape, is customized to be responsive to the changing and sometimes urgent needs of the community, and can be expanded to ensure additional representation and a level playing field."
The development and approval process is lead by a diverse constituency of technical and non-technical stakeholders and managed by PESC's Standards Forum for Education, comprised of the Change Control Board (CCB), Technical Advisory Board (TAB), Steering Committee and development workgroups. The entire process is documented and online at www.PESC.org as PESC's Policies and Procedures Manual v 1.0, comprised of the Submission and Approval process, PESC's Guidelines for Data Modeling and XML Architecture and the User Guide to the XML Registry and Repository for the Education Community.
